The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has officially published its Mobile Broadband Enhancement Plan: Nepal’s Road to 5G (2026). This strategic document outlines the nation's pathway to digital transformation, focusing on massive infrastructure upgrades and the transition to advanced mobile technologies.

Key regulatory and technical shifts include:
  • 3G Sunset: Service providers are mandated to phase out legacy 3G services by 2026 to optimize spectrum usage and resources.
  • Spectrum Management: The NTA plans upcoming auctions for key bands, including 700 MHz, 2300/2600 MHz, 3500 MHz, and 26 GHz to support 5G capacity and rural coverage.
  • Infrastructure Strategy: The plan promotes the deployment of small cells, high-capacity backhaul (fiber and E-band), and the adoption of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) as a primary connectivity tool for remote areas.
  • Security Framework: New requirements for zero-trust architectures and privacy-by-design principles will be enforced for 5G core networks.

For manufacturers and stakeholders, this roadmap signals a significant shift in network architecture requirements and compliance obligations within Nepal. Staying aligned with these evolving technical standards will be essential for market entry as the country transitions toward a 5G-ready environment.
